Tammy Busch, Pharm.D., BCPS, is a clinical pharmacist at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital and was an MSHP/MPA member from 2016-2018 and rejoined in 2021.
Describe Your Role/Day in the Life:

I work in a small community hospital which also has an attached long-term care facility and an infusion center. On any given day, I am verifying orders for inpatients, dosing antibiotics and anticoagulants, monitoring chemotherapy orders, attending care conferences and performing chart review for the long-term care residents, performing medication reconciliation, and checking outpatient prescriptions for employees. We work closely with all members of the patient-care team in each area to best address patient needs and help prevent readmission.

Why You’re an MSHP/MPA Member:

I am a member of the Northern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (NMSHP) in which I serve as the representative from northern Michigan to MSHP bringing news from the organization back to our northern Michigan chapter as well as keeping MSHP updated about the northern chapter’s activities. Being a member of MPA and MSHP allows me to be informed of the current challenges and recent accomplishments of the pharmacy profession in Michigan as well as how we fare on a national level. I am able to stay current with pending pharmacy legislation and changing pharmacist licensing requirements. I can also partake in the various CE offerings each year, live and via home-study, to keep current with those requirements.

Recent Accomplishments:

I returned to school in 2016 to pursue my Doctor of Pharmacy degree, which I completed at the University of Florida in 2018. I then earned my Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists (BCPS) certification in 2019. I most recently completed my immunization certification this spring. On a personal note, I just completed my first (and only?) half-marathon!

How MSHP/MPA Has Helped You Achieve Any Accomplishments:

When I returned to school to pursue my Pharm.D., I partook in Pharmacy Day at the Capitol and sat in on a legislative session. This helped me fulfill a project requirement for school, but it also allowed me to meet many amazing and accomplished people – while staying involved with the legislative and regulatory process. I recently completed my immunization certification through the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and MPA. As my career has changed to encompass different facets of pharmacy practice, I have found that MSHP also has many helpful toolkits and practice resources to foster the changes.
